One Drive Quick Support Guide

Ensuring OneDrive is Running

To keep OneDrive running and syncing correctly:

  1. Check the OneDrive Icon:

    • Look for the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar/system tray (Windows).

  2. Restart OneDrive:

    • If the icon is missing, press Windows + S, type "OneDrive," and press Enter to restart it.

  3. Verify Sync Status:

    • Click on the OneDrive icon to view its status.

    • If it’s not syncing, follow any displayed troubleshooting tips or submit a ticket to help desk.

  4. Update OneDrive:

    • Ensure OneDrive is updated to the latest version.

    • Right-click the OneDrive icon, go to "Settings," and check for updates.

  5. Reconnect Your Account:

    • If syncing issues persist, sign out of OneDrive and sign back in.

Tip: Ensure your internet connection is stable and that you are signed into the correct account.

Saving Files to OneDrive

Ensure your important files are securely saved to OneDrive with these steps:

  1. Save Directly to OneDrive:

    • When saving a file in an application, choose OneDrive as the destination folder in the "Save As" dialog.

  2. Drag and Drop Files:

    • Open File Explorer, and drag files into your OneDrive folder to upload them.

  3. Enable Auto-Save for Desktop, Documents, and Pictures:

    • Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon in your taskbar/system tray.

    • Click on "Settings," then go to the "Backup" tab.

    • Select "Manage Backup," and follow the prompts to back up these folders automatically.

Freeing Up Space Using OneDrive

OneDrive's "Free up space" feature helps you manage storage by removing local copies of files while keeping them accessible in the cloud. Here's how to use it:

  1. Open File Explorer:

    • Navigate to the OneDrive folder on your computer.

  2. Select Files or Folders:

    • Right-click on the files or folders you want to free up space for.

  3. Choose "Free up space":

    • From the context menu, click on "Free up space."

    • This removes the local copy but keeps the file in the cloud so that you can work on it from you computer without taking up storage space locally.

Tip: Files marked with a cloud icon are only available online and do not use local storage.
